I joined the faculty of the College of Library and Information Science in the fall of 1996. Before coming to South Carolina, I was a member of the faculty of the School of Library of Information and Library Science at the University of Kentucky. My experience includes several years as a secondary school library media specialist in Florida and as an elementary school library media specialist for the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Wiesbaden, Germany. I have also worked as a public librarian and as a research assistant for the Florida House of Representatives. My doctorate is from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the MLS from the University of South Florida, and my undergraduate degree (in history and political science) is from the University of Florida. Professional affiliations include the American Library Association, the American Association of School Librarians, Reference & User Services Association, the Association for Library Services to Children, the Association of Library and Information Science Education, the South Carolina Association of School Librarians, and several education organizations.
I am currently a member of the American Library Association Literacy and Outreach Services Advisory Committee and the AASL unit representative to the Freedom to Read Foundation. Current research interests include education for prospective school library media specialists, the role of the school library media specialist in reading and literacy initiatives, and the role of school principals in support of library programs. Recent publications include articles in the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science, School Libraries Worldwide, and Teacher Librarian. I teach our basic reference course and courses related to materials and services to children and youth and school library programs.Office: 211 Davis College
