Greetings and Welcome to LISSA!
Welcome to the Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA) website. Here, you’ll find information about the organization and its services. If you have any questions, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
The 2012-2013 academic year is almost upon us, and the new officers have already been hard at work planning a year full of exciting events. We’re committed as an organization to building upon the great momentum from last year, and finding even more opportunities to contribute to the professional development of our current LISSA members. In addition, we’re focused on finding ways to give back to our community and provide a strong foundation for those who will follow us.
As a member of LISSA, you have a unique opportunity to build a professional network and develop skills before you ever start your first library job. You are encouraged to join professional associations as a student member, and have the opportunity to be actively involved with several state-level associations such as the South Carolina Library Association (SCLA) and the South Carolina chapter of the Special Libraries Association (SC-SLA). As a LISSA member, you have access to financial support to help defray some of the costs of attending professional conferences, and will present your experiences to the SLIS community via presentations, newsletter articles, or blog postings.
LISSA members are not restricted to those students living in Columbia, either. With our ever-expanding distance education program, our cohort members from the Upstate and Lowcountry in South Carolina, as well as our growing student populations in such far-flung locations such as Maine, West Virginia, and Virginia are integral to maintaining a strong, diverse student organization. Cohort members are encouraged to contribute regularly to our newsletter, SLISten UP!, and to organize volunteer activities and social events in their geographic areas, with support from the officers as needed. Monthly LISSA meetings are streamed live so that cohort members can enjoy real-time interaction with the Columbia members, and provide input and suggestions.
We’re so excited that you have chosen to join one of the most exciting student organizations on campus, and we’re only *slightly* biased. If you have any questions about LISSA, please don’t hesitate to contact an officer. We look forward to a fantastic year, and we can’t wait to meet everyone!
With warmest regards,
Welcome Message from LISSA Faculty Advisor Dr. Feili Tu
Dear SLIS Friends and Colleagues,
Welcome to the LISSA at the SLIS/USC! I am Feili Tu, the LISSA faculty advisor, and I would like to encourage you to join us.
LISSA is a junior professional organization committed to serving its members, supporting the SLIS and USC, and making a contribution to the information profession. LISSA’s accomplishments are well-known not only locally, but also in the library community statewide. Throughout the years, LISSA has been instrumental in sponsoring professional activities such as workshops and symposiums; these activities are available both onsite and online for distance participants.
LISSA is a student chapter of the ALA. As such, it promotes librarianship and takes part in a variety of enterprises with the ALA and other library groups (see more information at http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/cro/getinvolved/alachaptersfaq.cfm).
In addition, LISSA members know how to have fun. Join the group for their social functions and enjoy your peers in Columbia. But no matter where you live, you’ll find that becoming a member of LISSA will enhance your life as a SLIS student. Please join us!
With my warmest regards,
Feili Tu, Ph.D., M.L.I.S.
